This dataset includes all 138 public and private airports registered with the FAA as of Jan 1, 2004. It also includes other private airports in Maine which are not registered with the FAA. One FAA-registered airport in New Hampshire is included (Skyhaven - DAW - in Rochester). One Transport Canada-registered airport in New Brunswick (St Stephen - CCS3) is also included. There are certainly more small airfields in existence which are not registered with the FAA, as any pilot can land on their own property for non-commercial uses. Likewise, seaplanes can land on any body of water for non-commercial purposes. Locations are of the airport's runway area, and are based primarily on orthoimagery unless specified otherwise in the NOTES field. Positional accuracy of land-based airport locations is expected to be better than 3m, unless specified in the NOTES field. Runways of seaplane bases are estimated from the FAA data. Accuracy of seaplane base runways will be hard to measure since in reality any body of water can be used and the FAA designated runway areas are rough estimates. Such polygons may be off by as much as 2000'. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: MEGIS and MDOT airport data were used as a starting point. These points were checked against FAA data and aerial photos to give better locations and update attributes. When the existing data were fixed, the points were checked against a list of FAA active airports from www.globalair.com and then fixed or updated if needed. In all cases, fixing the location meant moving it to a point on the runway based on the aerial photos, and defining a polygon around the runway's edge. Updating attributes entailed checking them against current data shown on www.airnav.com and changing any differences. Typically this meant changing FAA designations or updating runway status. Runway length was typically taken from FAA data unless the aerial photos specifically showed a much different value (200' difference or greater). A geodatabase topology was constructed to make sure all airport points and polygons were synchronized. Multiple runway polygons at a single airport were merged. Runway polygons were digitized on the screen over the areas shown in aerial photos (unless otherwise noted in the NOTES field, or seaplane bases).
